Chester stuff by AishaxNekox Chester stuff by AishaxNekox
Before I say anything, I just want to say sorry DD: All I've been uploading lately are stupid little Black and White sketch dumps. I've just been in such a terrible art rut lately. Not the "I can't draw anything" type, because I'm drawing my ass off, but the "Oh my god what the hell is this my style is poo I can't finish any of these drawings" type -- I legitimately haven't been able to finish anything without rage quitting OTL Ive been trying everything from self portraits to backgrounds to old school disney-styled characters, but just. JSHDSKJ. And a bigger sorry to my commissioners for having to wait so long -- I've tried to do so many of them so many times, but it's not coming out like how I want DD: I promise I'll have them all done by the end of summer, at the very very latest.

...well that huge paragraph is over.

------------------------

ANYWAYS! xD I love doodling Chester Lloyd and his friends. I still don't want to give out too much information until the characters are ~completely~ developed, but I figure I'd upload this [also because i haven't uploaded anything in EVER.]

Pic 1: Clarice: *yawns groggily and enters the room* What...Ches, you're still here? Shouldn't you have gone back to your headstone by now?

Chester: *with his eyes still glued to the text* Ha! I can't even think about resting right now! Did you know that a cow's stomach is split into four parts?

Clarice: *leans over*....are you reading my old biology book?

Chester: *turns with a grin* It's fascinating!

Chester is pretty uneducated -- let's just leave it at that :,D and he likes bumming at Clarice's house. a lot. and dragging her on his "quests"....Navi is to Link as Chester is to Clarice.

Pic 2: When Chester first met the "Bayou Bete Noire", a powerful swamp lurking devil, he thought he was a homeless guy trying to rob graves.

Pic 3: Missy's a tsundere little talking cat. Chester loves her to death, and she haaates being hugged. She says the only reason she sticks around him is because he gives her scraps of people-food, and seeing as how she was once human herself before she pissed of the Bayou Bete Noire, she finds it degrading and disgusting to eat cat food.

lol i didnt feel like drawing the Imps of the Southern hospitality Twins....

and yes, even though he's a ghost, he';s able to control his "transparency", if you will. at 50% and below he's able to walk through walls and stuff like that. at 100% fully visable, he acts like a solid mass, being able to pick up objects and such, and have people not fall through him if they try to, say, put a hand on his shoulder.

Random interesting facts -- they all have wicked deep south accents, except for Chester and Clarice -- Clarice is originally from Connecticut, and Chester grew up in Georgia [so it's not so bad of an accent] All other characters connected to them pretty much were born and raised in Mississippi or Louisiana. Also, this story line takes place in the same alternate universe as Black Jack and BJBB.

OTL I always make my descriptions way too long...whatever, it'll all make better sense when I get his ref sheet out xD;

Maybe you should try and copy an artist's style which you admire, even though it's said to be bad I always find it really helpful and soon start changing it over time and work it into a new style which I like.
Now, even with my style which I find satisfying I always still end up adding in little bits of other peoples styles to make my style even more appealing for me ^^

sorry for the longness and hope it helps ^^

I think I have something that might help/encourage you-- this is from an artist who wanted to learn how to draw superrealistically, but hadn't drawn much in the past. These are his sketches, which really show how lots of practice can really help and stufffffffffff anyway see for yourself! :)

i get into those kind of ruts a lot too. for me, it's because i'm always comparing myself with amazing artists i see on deviantart. i improve when i do this, but i also start to hate my work. i find that i like drawing a lot better when i stop competing and draw for fun. i tell myself that no matter how good i get, there will always be someone better.
i don't know if this helps. >.> hope you start liking your art again soon

"Oh my god what the hell is this my style is poo I can't finish any of these drawings"

Don't think about style. Let all that leak out of your brain. Style is a restriction artists place on themselves when they don't want to reach outside the box. Feel like you're stuck in a rut? You probably are. Escape “style” and the limitations is places upon you. Escape the demands and expectations of fans who only come for anime and cute boys. Draw unordinary things and you will expand your knowledge base.

“from self portraits to backgrounds to old school disney-styled characters”

Well, this sounds interesting. Why not post these as a scrap? Then we can see where your flaws are and where you're not improving. Have you done any figure studies lately? What about tone or colour studies? It doesn't have to be a finished “scene” for you to have gotten in some practice. Even the skin of a banana up close can be interesting if you make it so.

“I still don't want to give out too much information until the characters are ~completely~ developed“

I would prefer more background information so that I can get a sense of who these characters are. I can't care about them until I know something about them.

“but I figure I'd upload this [also because i haven't uploaded anything in EVER.]”

This might be part of your problem. You're most likely pacing yourself too fast. I can tell you this: no masterpiece was ever painted in 30 minutes. Sure, being quick may work for a charicature artist at a theme park, but it doesn't allow for really *good* art. Slow down. Spend more time on your individual drawings. Don't hastily smear in a background. Don't skip on perspective flipping or underneath layers that correct the figure or environment.

Slow down.
Pace yourself.
Do better.

Ok, on to the actual drawings.

First note I have, and this goes back to my previous comment on your poll: what time period are these characters set in? If it is anything other than modern day, their clothing is very anachronistic. Chester looks like he's kinda old-timey inspired, but it's rather vague, as his hair, gloves and pants are very mid-2000's. Clarice looks modern-day 80's-inspired (that is, the 80's is popular right now, so trends are repeated, but different) Bayou Bete's clothing is pretty much pure fantasy. I'm not entirely sure what his hat is, because it's too vague.

If you have an idea of what time period these characters are supposed to be from, I have a large resource of historical costuming information I could point you towards for future reference, or just inspiration.

Second thing: How old is Chester supposed to be? (and by that, I mean how old are you drawing him, not “he's 700 but looks 15”) In these pictures, Chester looks a few years younger than you've previously drawn him. He face is rounder, and his features are larger and more childish.

When drawing straight things, use the line tool. Don't use hand strokes. Professional comic artists use rulers when drawing buildings, tables, comic borders, etc. Shaky, crooked lines won't give you the perspective practice you need. You need straight lines to use as a guide, otherwise -absolutely everything- is sent off-kilter.

the stripes on Chester's shirt
the lines on the book
the lines on the desk
the odd reading-table-thing
the gravestones

You need to have straight baselines to build up a proper drawing. It's fine to have sketchlines, but don't have a finished product with those three ends not meeting like in the lower corner of the first drawing. That's bad practice, and you're not learning anything by letting yourself get away with it.

Also regarding fine details: What is that thing underneath Chester's brain-hole, beside his cheek? Is it his ear? If so, it is misplaced. It is far too low and far too close to the front of his face. Take a look at the third drawing without the hair in front of his face and you can see the mistake. I notice that this mistake of putting ears too low and too far forward is common in your artwork.

[link]

Green: Notice how close his ear is to the face when we remove the hair? It's practically coming out of his cheek. There's no room for it here.

Purple: given a bit of cheek definition, the ear should be more behind the cheek than it is

Red: I noticed this afterwards, see how high his neck is compared to the bottom of his chin? This is anatomically impossible. Even for an awkward hugging pose, his neck is awfully bulky and is either extremely wide, or coming out from an odd angle (we can't see the front of his throat, and so can't tell)

This is the kind of pose that a good reference photo will help greatly with. It doesn't even have to be the same gender, just getting the body positions right would improve the drawing greatly.

Good luck!

....good lord this made my brain hurt...
Seriously though...this all makes art seem a ton more restricted than how you were defining 'style'...Style is something artists use to give themselves structure, consistency, so they know it's their work...otherwise you're all over the place

AND GOOD LORD D: THIS WAS JUST LITTLE DOODLES OF HER'S...YOU MAKE IT SEEM LIKE SHE WAS TRYING TO REPLICATE THE MONA LISA

Art can't be perfect. If we all drew like that, it'd be boring....just my thoughts since this was mentally bugging me QuQ...sorry if I sound mean...ldkjfhkadjsafhlk QwQ

:iconrobynrose:
RobynRose Featured By Owner Jul 30, 2011
Yes, but when you mention consistency, style can force an artist to make the same choice over and over again, preventing them from expanding.

For example, if you considered "Your style" to always draw extra-large anime eyes on all your characters. That means that anything drawn that doesn't have alrge anime eyes "isn't your style". That is restricting. Sure, it may be consistent, but it's not interesting or new. It's repetitive.

Also, you should be able to recognise what is your work and what isn't, simply because you did it. You don't need to stylise everything to prove that you made it. That's what watermarks are for.
